Living in Brighton, MI: A Local Realtor's Guide

Downtown Brighton, Michigan in fall

I recently moved to the Brighton and South Lyon area, and I've loved getting to know Brighton. As a Realtor with Tremaine Real Estate, I'm excited to help buyers discover what makes this Livingston County community special. If Brighton is on your list, here's what you should know.

Why People Move to Brighton

Brighton is a small city in southeast Livingston County, settled in 1832. It sits at the crossroads of I-96 and US-23, so you're well connected to the rest of Michigan. At the same time, you're surrounded by lakes, state recreation land, and a downtown with real personality. Many buyers look at the city along with the surrounding Brighton, Genoa, and Green Oak townships, which offer even more choices.

Downtown Brighton and the Mill Pond

The heart of Brighton is its downtown, which wraps around the Mill Pond. Main Street's shops and restaurants run right up to the water. A paved promenade and boardwalk circle the pond, and you can cross the "Tridge," a three-way wooden footbridge that's one of the most photographed spots in town.

On the north side of Main Street, The AMP, the Brighton Amphitheater, hosts concerts, events, and fitness classes throughout the year. In summer, the free Live at Millpond Park concert series brings people downtown with lawn chairs and blankets. You'll also find the Imagination Station playground, a community fire pit, and plenty of outdoor seating. The area around the pond is part of downtown's social district, so you can grab a drink in a designated cup and stroll.

For everyday shopping, Brighton Mall sits off I-96, and Green Oak Village Place is on the east side of town.

Parks, Lakes, and Year-Round Outdoors

Brighton is a dream for anyone who loves the outdoors:

  • Brighton Recreation Area covers 4,947 acres just west of US-23 and south of I-96. It has nine lakes, campgrounds, a swim beach, a disc golf course, and a large trail system for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
  • Island Lake Recreation Area spans 4,000 acres along the Huron River, with four inland lakes, paddling, swimming at Kent Lake and Spring Mill Pond, and a bike path that connects to Kensington Metropark and the Huron Valley Trail.
  • Mt. Brighton has been a family ski and snowboard spot since 1960, with 25 trails and five lifts, so winter here is something to look forward to.

Schools

The city is served by Brighton Area Schools, which includes four elementary schools, two middle schools (Scranton and Maltby), and Brighton High School. The area also has private and charter school options. Many homes with a Brighton mailing address are in neighboring districts, so I always recommend confirming the district for any home you're considering. I'm glad to help you look it up.

Commute and Location

Location is one of Brighton's biggest advantages. I-96 runs east toward Novi and Detroit and west toward Lansing. US-23 heads south toward Ann Arbor and north toward Flint. Grand River Avenue is the main local route through the area. Whether you work in Ann Arbor, Lansing, metro Detroit, or Genesee County, Brighton puts you right in the middle.

Homes in Brighton

The Brighton area offers a wide range of homes. Near downtown, you'll find older homes within walking distance of the Mill Pond, plus condos and townhomes for a lower-maintenance lifestyle. In the surrounding townships, there are established subdivisions, newer construction, homes on larger lots, and homes on or near the area's many lakes. Inventory changes quickly, so it's worth keeping an eye on new listings.
