Living in Fenton & Linden, MI: A Local's Guide

Oct. 09, 2026 | Written by: Ashley Provenzola

Downtown Fenton, Michigan in fall

I've lived in Fenton for over 20 years and have been a licensed Realtor since 2008, helping buyers and sellers across Genesee County. If you're thinking about a move to Fenton or neighboring Linden, here's my local's guide to what makes these two communities special.

Why People Love Fenton and Linden

Fenton and Linden sit side by side in southern Genesee County, just south of the Flint area. Both grew up along the Shiawassee River, both have walkable historic downtowns, and both are surrounded by lakes. Fenton is the larger of the two, a city of about 12,000 people. Linden is a smaller city of about 4,000 with a true small-town feel.

Downtown Fenton

Fenton started out in 1834 as a settlement called Dibbleville. According to local legend, it got its current name from a card game in 1837: William M. Fenton won the right to name the town, and Robert LeRoy got the main street, which is why downtown runs along LeRoy Street today. The historic core is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Dibbleville-Fentonville Historic District.

At the heart of downtown is Millpond Park, next to City Hall, where the Shiawassee River flows over a dam past a gazebo and riverside walkway. Just down the street, the Fenton Community & Cultural Center hosts the Fenton Farmers Market on Thursday evenings in season. On summer Thursday evenings, concerts fill nearby Rackham Park. And every Fourth of July, the Fenton Freedom Festival brings a downtown parade, a pancake breakfast, a Rubber Ducky Regatta, and fireworks over Silver Lake Park.

Downtown Linden

Linden's downtown grew up around the intersection of Bridge and Broad Streets. The village was incorporated in 1871 and became a city in 1988. Its centerpiece is the historic Linden Mill on the Shiawassee River, one of the oldest buildings in Genesee County. It's being restored right now, with plans for the library and museum to return. Across the river, the Linden Mill Pond park and gazebo host the Music by the Mill concerts on summer Wednesday evenings. On Memorial Day, Linden holds a parade followed by a community picnic and concert by the gazebo.

Lakes, Parks, and the Outdoors

If you love the water, you'll feel right at home here. Fenton Township alone has 18 lakes of 11 acres or larger, including Lake Fenton, Silver Lake, Lake Ponemah, Loon Lake, Pine Lake, and Byram Lake. Silver Lake Park, the City of Fenton's largest park, has a summer swimming beach, ball fields, nature trails, and pavilions. Linden County Park, just south of Linden, has Clover Beach on Byram Lake, walking trails, ball diamonds, and a sledding hill in winter.

The new LAFF Pathway (for Linden, Argentine, Fenton, and Fenton Township) is a paved trail connecting these communities. Its second phase opened in fall 2026, running along Silver Lake Road from Linden to Jennings Road in Fenton, and the whole pathway now stretches more than five miles.

Schools

The area is served by three main districts: Fenton Area Public Schools, Lake Fenton Community Schools, and Linden Community Schools. I know Lake Fenton as a parent, since one of my kids goes to school there. District lines don't always follow city or township boundaries, so I always recommend confirming the school district for any specific home. I'm happy to help with that.

Commute and Location

US-23 runs along Fenton's west side, with interchanges at Owen Road, Silver Lake Road, and North Road. Head north and US-23 meets I-75 near Flint, your route toward Detroit and points north. Head south and it's a straight shot toward Ann Arbor. The City of Fenton notes that Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, and Detroit are all within about an hour.

Homes in Fenton and Linden

There's a great range of homes here. Around both downtowns, you'll find older homes with character on established streets. Farther out, there are subdivisions, newer construction, and condos for lower-maintenance living. And of course there are lake homes, from year-round houses on all-sports lakes to cottages on quieter waters. The surrounding townships, including Fenton, Argentine, and Tyrone, add even more choices. What's available changes all the time, so the best way to see your options is to browse current listings.
