Living in South Lyon, MI: A Home Buyer's Guide
Oct. 09, 2026 | Written by: Ashley Provenzola
I recently moved to the South Lyon and Brighton area, and I've loved getting to know it, first as a new neighbor and now as a Realtor helping buyers find their place here. If you're thinking about a move to South Lyon, here's my guide to what makes this small city so easy to love.
Why People Love South Lyon
South Lyon is a small city in the southwest corner of Oakland County, right where Oakland, Livingston, and Washtenaw counties come together. It has the feel of a close-knit hometown, with a walkable historic downtown and community events, but it's also close to the big parks, shopping, and highways of southeast Michigan. The town dates back to 1832 and still has its railroad-town character, which you'll notice the first time you walk downtown.
Downtown South Lyon and Things to Do
Downtown South Lyon centers on Lafayette Street (Pontiac Trail) and Lake Street, with local shops, restaurants, and services. A highlight is McHattie Park, a nearly 15-acre park in the heart of the city. It has playgrounds, ball diamonds, sand volleyball, a sledding hill, and an outdoor ice rink in winter.
McHattie Park is also home to the Witch's Hat Depot Museum and Historic Village. The depot is named for its pointed roofline, was built in 1909, and was moved to the park in 1976. Today it serves as a museum and gathering place for the South Lyon Historical Society, and the historic village also includes a one-room schoolhouse, a caboose, a chapel, and a Victorian gazebo. In summer, the park hosts Concerts in the Park, and each fall brings the Depot Days festival.
On Saturdays from May through October, the South Lyon Farmers & Artisans Market sets up downtown with local produce, honey, and handmade art. It's a great way to meet your new neighbors.
Parks, Trails, and the Outdoors
If you like getting outside, South Lyon is a great fit. The city has more than 200 acres of parkland, including McHattie Park, the 130-acre Volunteer Park on Dixboro Road, and Paul Baker Memorial Park with its fountain and gazebo.
The Huron Valley Trail is a paved rail-trail that runs on the old Grand Trunk rail line from South Lyon through Lyon Township and Milford Township. It connects to McHattie and Volunteer Parks, Lyon Oaks County Park, Kensington Metropark, and Island Lake Recreation Area. That adds up to more than 25 miles of connected paved trails for biking, walking, and running. Kensington's 4,481 acres around Kent Lake have beaches, boating, hiking, and sledding, so there's something to do in every season.
Schools
South Lyon is served by South Lyon Community Schools, which covers about 83 square miles across parts of Oakland, Washtenaw, and Livingston counties. The district has eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools: South Lyon High School and South Lyon East High School. Because some homes with a South Lyon mailing address fall in other districts, I always recommend checking the school district for any specific home. I'm happy to help you with that.
Commute and Location
One of South Lyon's biggest draws is its location. It's a short drive to I-96, which connects you to Novi, Detroit, Brighton, and Lansing. Ann Arbor is to the south, and US-23 runs to the west. That makes South Lyon a popular choice for households with jobs in different directions, and for anyone who wants small-town living without feeling far from everything.
Homes in South Lyon
South Lyon offers a nice mix of housing. Near downtown you'll find older homes with character on tree-lined streets. Farther out, there are established subdivisions and newer neighborhoods. Condos and townhomes are a good fit if you're looking for lower maintenance. The surrounding townships, including Lyon Township, Green Oak Township, and Salem Township, add more options, from larger lots to newer construction. What's available changes all the time, so the best way to see your options is to browse current listings.
