Living on Island & Fonda Lakes, Brighton
Oct. 09, 2026 | Written by: Ashley ProvenzolaIf lake life is on your wish list but you don't want a brand-new subdivision, the Island and Fonda Lakes neighborhood is worth a look. It's a long-established community on two all-sports lakes, right next to a state recreation area. I live just down the road in South Lyon, and here's my guide.
Where it is
The neighborhood is in Green Oak Charter Township, Livingston County, with Brighton (48116) mailing addresses. Island Lake Recreation Area borders its south end, and the state park also wraps around the south and east sides of Island Lake. The association's hall is on Superior Drive. The neighborhood association notes it's close to two major freeways and to the Green Oak Village shopping center.
The association lists Brighton Area Schools for the neighborhood, with school bus stops throughout. Confirm the assignment for any specific address.
The homes
This is one of the older lake neighborhoods in the area. The association says it was developed in 1927 and today has about 220 homes along about five miles of road. After nearly a century, you'll find a real mix: lake homes, homes just off the water, and houses from many different decades. Each one is a bit different, so it pays to look closely at lot size, lake frontage or access, and updates. Green Oak Township handles land use and building rules, so I always check township requirements before buyers plan big changes.
Amenities and what's nearby
Island Lake and Fonda Lake are both all-sports lakes. The neighborhood has several access easements and a boat launch on each lake, plus a residents-only swimming beach on Island Lake. The association hall on Superior Drive hosts meetings, and the association has been working to restore it for future activities.
The location is the real bonus. You can walk or bike straight into Island Lake Recreation Area from neighborhood roads, and from there it's easy to get to its trails, the Huron River, and the paved trail connections toward Kensington Metropark and South Lyon. Brighton's downtown is a short drive north. My Brighton community guide has more about the area.
Association and key rules
The Island and Fonda Lake Association holds regular meetings, an annual membership meeting each spring, and collects annual dues each July. A few practical things to know:
- Boat launch keys are issued through the association. Owners sign a key assignment form, and the association checks that dues are current.
- Land use and improvements (additions, docks, and other projects) go through Green Oak Township.
- Formal correspondence goes to the association's PO box. The board can also be reached by email.
