South Lyon Community Update: October 21-31, 2026

Halloween week is almost here! My Millennium Middle School twins are already planning costumes, and there's plenty going on around South Lyon to keep the fun going. Here's what's coming up.

Events

Trunk or Treat, Thursday, Oct. 22, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., South Lyon Senior Care & Rehab Center (700 Reynold Sweet Pkwy.). All ages are welcome. Residents hand out candy, and there's a touch-a-truck, plus free cider, donuts, hot dogs, and burgers while supplies last.

South Lyon Farmers & Artisans Market, Saturdays, Oct. 24 and 31, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. These are the last two Saturdays of the season!

Salem-South Lyon District Library (9800 Pontiac Trail):

  • Geocaching 101, Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. to noon. Learn the basics of this GPS treasure hunt from a Michigan Geocaching Organization member. All ages.
  • Haunted Michigan with Rev. Gerald S. Hunter, Thursday, Oct. 29, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The author of the Haunted Michigan series shares spooky stories from almost 40 years of paranormal investigations. Registration recommended.

First Responder Monument Dedication, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 10 a.m., McHattie Park (474 W. Lafayette). Everyone is invited to honor the first responders who protect our community.

Scarecrows on the Grand, through Oct. 31 in downtown New Hudson. Stroll or drive by the creative scarecrow displays and vote for your favorite.

Pumpkin Archery, Sunday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m., McHattie Park. SLARA lets kids 7 and up shoot at jack-o'-lanterns. Equipment is provided; register in advance.

News

Show off your Halloween house! City of South Lyon residents can enter the free Halloween Home Decorating Contest by noon on Friday, Oct. 23. Email southlyoncityhall@southlyonmi.org with the subject "Halloween Home Decorating Contest" and include your name, phone, and address. City Council judges will tour the entries in the evenings Oct. 26-28, and the winners will be announced Oct. 30.

Costumed pups, online this year. With all the downtown construction, SLARA is pausing its Pup-Pawrade. Instead, share your dog's costume on Facebook (tag SLARA) or email it to jenna@slrec.com by 9 p.m. on Halloween. Voting runs Nov. 2-4.

Softer water in Lyon Township. The township's South Hill plant was set to start softening water around the third week of October. Expect a few weeks of blended water. If you have a home softener, check with your softener company about your settings.

Market snapshot: According to Realcomp, Oakland County's median sale price in September was just over $383,500.

Road & Construction Updates

Good news on Pontiac Trail! As of Oct. 19, Pontiac Trail is open to two-way traffic from 9 Mile Road to Reynold Sweet Parkway. Here's where things stand:

  • North of Reynold Sweet Parkway to the CSX tracks, Pontiac Trail is still closed northbound but open southbound. The northbound detour is still 9 Mile to Griswold to 10 Mile to Martindale to 11 Mile.
  • 10 Mile Road stays closed on the west side of the Pontiac Trail intersection until late October. Westbound 10 Mile traffic can only turn south onto Pontiac Trail. The City has posted an updated detour map.
  • RCOC now expects the project to be substantially complete by late November.

School Happenings

South Lyon Community Schools: Elementary students have a half day (a.m. only) on Thursday, Oct. 22, and there's no school for students on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
